Richard grew up surrounded by metal workers, which makes metal a most natural material for him to work with. Through the various techniques of metalsmithing, fabrication and welding, he produces sculptures that are infused with neon. They illuminate an entire space in luscious lights and shadows, bathing and embracing the viewer.
For Richard, eruptions of the metal's surface represents the emergence of life and neon speaks of the awakening spirit.
Richard attended Indiana University and then Scottsdale Community College and Arizona State University. He came to the conclusion that he needed less academia and more hands-on studio time to explore techniques and improve on new methods. "I needed to just get out there and do it!" And so he did!
Richard's sculptures are full of life. Their vibrant shapes and textures evoke a wondrous variety of emotions. Their powerful designs complement any environment.
While most work done with neon uses exposed neon tubing, Richard uses his in more subtle ways - as background lighting behind his sculptures, creating a soft hazy effect.
"I create art out of things encountered every day. These objects just strike me in a different way," says Richard.
"I love creating with neon because it enables me to work with color and form and light without the restrictions of the metal. Neon generates movement and excitement in a piece - and I believe that all art must involve some type of emotional upheaval."
